Before my recent trip to Iceland, I had one important task to complete: finding a warm and comfortable jacket that could withstand the country’s often-freezing temperatures. I knew I would be spending a lot of time outdoors, exploring Reykjavik’s otherworldly and unpredictable climate. This meant I needed a jacket that could handle unexpected weather conditions such as heavy water exposure under waterfalls, strong winds on black sand beaches, and sudden drops in temperature while chasing the Northern Lights.
After searching through countless reviews online and asking for recommendations from friends, I came across Orolay as the go-to brand for all-weather coats. The brand is known for creating some of the warmest and most durable outerwear on the market, with their famous Thickened Down Jacket receiving over 28,000 ratings on Amazon alone. I decided to try out the longer version of this jacket, the Orolay Thickened Long Down Jacket ($80, originally $150), and I can honestly say that in all my years of shopping, I have never found a warmer coat. What I Like About This Orolay Coat
As someone who is trying to limit unnecessary splurges and invest in versatile pieces that can work for various occasions and weather conditions, this Orolay jacket ticks all the boxes and more. It is made from a windproof and waterproof polyester material, with an extra-large and adjustable hood that provides protection for your face in harsh weather conditions.
The jacket is filled with 90% duck down and 10% duck feather, with an insulated design that can withstand temperatures as low as negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Orolay’s website. During my trip to Iceland, the temperatures ranged from 25 degrees Fahrenheit to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, and I hardly noticed any changes or intense winds because of the comfort provided by this coat.
The jacket also has unique design features that make it incredibly practical for all-day wear. It is completely packable, making it easy to fold and fit into suitcases or duffel bags without taking up much space, despite its thickened down design. The side zipper pockets are deep and lined with a plush material for extra warmth. I was able to fit everything from a small water bottle to a packable umbrella in the pockets, often eliminating the need for a purse. I also appreciate the two-way zipper and button accents, making it easy to take the jacket on and off when going indoors.
As a fashion lover, I am obsessed with the sunny yellow color of this jacket. It is a bit outside of my comfort zone, as I usually stick to neutral and understated tones. However, winter can be gloomy, which is why I opted for something brighter and mood-boosting. If the pastel yellow shade is not your style, the waterproof coat is also available in three other colors, including black and white (which I plan to purchase as well).
What’s Worth Noting
My only issue with this long jacket is the placement of the pockets. They are situated slightly higher on the coat, which can make it awkward to place your hands in them. This is due to the depth of the pockets, which are designed to hold larger items in a protected (zippered) space, such as a smartphone, passport holder, tissues, or a packable umbrella. If you are looking for a jacket that you can comfortably place your hands in, I would recommend looking for another option.
