This Is Officially The Worst Position To Sleep In, Expert Says

If only I was capable of falling asleep on my side, I would gladly take this advice. But for those of us who are doomed to lie face-down like a sloth on our too-big mattress trunks, there’s some bad news coming our way.

Sleep coach James Wilson, also known as The Sleep Geek, says that sleeping on your front is the worst possible position to fall asleep in. In a recent Instagram Reel, he explains that it is bad for your spine, neck, hips, knees, and your entire body. He advises sleeping on your side, preferably with a pillow between your legs, or on your back (although this can lead to snoring), to wake up with less discomfort and to save money on physiotherapy. In an interview with The Telegraph, he also warned that sleeping on your front can cause injury and significantly disrupt the quality and quantity of your sleep.

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust also agrees that sleeping on your front is generally not advised. They mention that this position increases the likelihood of straining your neck and advises against it. However, if sleeping on your front is truly the only way you can settle down, they recommend placing a pillow under your stomach to prevent back pain.

So, what is the best sleeping position? According to experts, if you can, start sleeping on your side with a pillow between your legs, and even give the pillow a hug. Cardiologist and director of Mayo Clinic’s sleep facility, Dr. Virend Somers, also agrees that sleeping on your side is the optimal position. He suggests elevating your head slightly to alleviate any acid reflux or snoring issues.

If you’re like me and have been sleeping on your front for as long as you can remember, this news might come as a shock. But it’s never too late to make some changes for the better. And considering the impact that sleep has on our overall health and well-being, it’s definitely worth the effort.
