Nathan Lane Says He Didn’t Get This Big Film Role Because The Director Thought He Was ‘Too Gay’

Nathan Lane is a name that needs no introduction in the world of entertainment. The Broadway star has been a household name for decades, known for his impeccable acting skills and comedic timing. However, in a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Lane revealed that his sexuality has limited his opportunities in Hollywood.

The 1996 film Space Jam, starring NBA legend Michael Jordan and the cast of Looney Tunes, is a classic that is loved by many. But what many may not know is that Lane was up for a role in the film, but ultimately didn’t get it because of his sexuality.

In the interview, Lane shared that the director, Joe Pytka, saw him hosting the Tony Awards and thought that he was “too gay” to play the part of Jordan’s assistant, Stan Podolak. The role eventually went to Seinfeld star Wayne Knight.

Lane, who publicly came out as gay in 1999, believes that homophobia played a role in him not getting the part. He stated, “Homophobia is alive and well, still.” It’s disheartening to hear that even in the entertainment industry, where diversity and inclusivity are celebrated, there are still prejudices and discrimination based on one’s sexuality.

But Lane didn’t let this setback bring him down. He jokingly said, “So thank God, I didn’t have to do Space Jam…” and moved on to other projects. However, it’s hard not to wonder how the film would have turned out with Lane’s comedic genius and charm.

Interestingly, Lane wasn’t the only one considered for the role of Stan Podolak. Michael J. Fox and Chevy Chase were also in the running, but Warner Bros. wasn’t keen on these choices. Even Wayne Knight’s Seinfeld co-star, Jason Alexander, was offered the role but politely declined.

In a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pytka revealed that nobody wanted to be in the movie. But it’s safe to say that Space Jam wouldn’t have been the same without Knight’s iconic portrayal of Stan Podolak.

Lane’s experience with Space Jam is just one of many instances where his sexuality may have limited his opportunities in Hollywood. In a 2023 interview on Sunday Today, he opened up about the challenges of being gay in the industry.

He recalled an interview with Oprah Winfrey, where he and his co-star Robin Williams were promoting their film, The Birdcage. Lane said he was “not prepared” to discuss his sexuality and was “so scared” of how Hollywood would react.

But Williams, who Lane described as a “beautiful, sensitive soul,” jumped in and diverted the conversation. Lane believes that Williams did it because he was a “saint” and wanted to protect him.

Despite the challenges, Lane has continued to thrive in his career, with numerous Tony and Emmy awards under his belt. He has proven time and time again that his talent and hard work are what truly matter, not his sexuality.

In the end, Lane’s story serves as a reminder that homophobia still exists, and it’s up to all of us to fight against it. We must create a world where one’s sexuality doesn’t limit their opportunities or define them as a person.

As for Space Jam, it remains a beloved film that has stood the test of time. And while we can only imagine how Lane would have brought his unique flair to the role of Stan Podolak, we can still appreciate Knight’s fantastic performance.

In the words of Lane himself, “Thank God, I didn’t have to do Space Jam…” But thank you, Nathan Lane, for being an inspiration and a trailblazer in the entertainment industry. Your talent knows no bounds, and your bravery in speaking out about your experiences will continue to pave the way for future generations.
