The Number Of Brits Who Think America Is A ‘Friend And Ally’ Has Plummeted Since Trump Became President Again

The G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, last week was a highly anticipated event, with leaders from the world’s most powerful countries coming together to discuss pressing global issues. Among those in attendance were British Labour Party leader Keir Starmer and former US President Donald Trump.

However, what was meant to be a meeting of allies and friends turned out to be a stark reminder of the strained relationship between the UK and the US in recent years. The latest YouGov poll reveals that the number of British people who consider America a “friend and ally” has significantly dropped since Trump’s re-entry into the White House.

The poll cited Trump’s decision to impose tariffs on imports to the US and his praise for Russian President Vladimir Putin as reasons for this sharp decline in UK’s attitude towards America. It is no surprise that with Trump’s return, the number of Brits who believe the US is “unfriendly” towards the UK and Europe has also risen.

The numbers are striking – only 30% of UK voters now consider the US as a friend and ally, a sharp decline from the 50% when Joe Biden was president. Before Trump, only 9% of Britons believed America to be an unfriendly nation, but that number has now more than doubled to 17%.

The YouGov poll reflects the changing sentiments towards the US as an international partner. It is no secret that during his first term in office, Trump’s policies and actions have raised doubts about American willingness to protect Europe, praised foreign dictators like Putin, and risked inflaming conflicts in the Middle East. These factors have undoubtedly contributed to the cooling of British attitudes towards the US.

According to YouGov, the numbers are the lowest since they started tracking this question in 2019, and it is concerning that six months into Trump’s second term, attitudes towards the US have become more negative than they were during his first stint in the White House.

In contrast, the poll also revealed that there has been a significant increase in the number of British voters who believe the government should seek closer ties with Europe instead of the United States. 42% of respondents said they preferred closer ties with Europe, while only 11% chose the US.

This shift in attitude towards the US and Europe is not surprising, given the tumultuous relationship between the UK and the US during Trump’s presidency. It is evident that the majority of British people no longer view America as a reliable and trustworthy ally.

The YouGov poll caught the attention of many political analysts and experts, who were quick to speculate on the reasons for this drastic change in public opinion. Some have suggested that Trump’s policies, such as imposing tariffs on other countries, have hurt the UK’s economy, while others argue that his praise for dictators has tarnished America’s image on the global stage.

Another significant factor could be the stark contrast between Trump and his successor, Joe Biden. During his time in office, Biden has taken a more diplomatic and collaborative approach, which has resonated positively with the British public, compared to Trump’s brash and unconventional tactics.

The poll results have also prompted discussions on the future of the special relationship between the UK and the US. For decades, the two countries have been close allies, sharing strong economic and political ties. However, it seems that this relationship has been put to the test under Trump’s presidency, and it remains to be seen how it will evolve now that Biden is in the White House.

One thing is certain; the UK and the US must work together to repair the damage done by the previous administration and strengthen their partnership for the future. As one of the world’s leading democracies, it is imperative that the UK and the US continue to stand by each other and work towards common goals for global peace and prosperity.

In a world where international relations are becoming increasingly strained, it is vital for countries to maintain strong alliances. The YouGov poll serves as a reminder that leaders must prioritize diplomacy, mutual respect, and cooperation to maintain healthy relationships with their allies.

Despite the current challenges, there is hope that the UK and the US will continue to be close friends and allies. As we move forward, let us hope that the special relationship between these two nations will only grow stronger, and they will work together to overcome the global challenges that lie ahead.
