“Myanmar cannot become a forgotten crisis,” said Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). “This country has faced cyclones, war, conflict, violence, climate and now immense suffering.” These powerful words serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by the people of Myanmar.
It has been three months since a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit Myanmar, leaving thousands of people homeless and in desperate need of aid. However, despite the urgent calls for help, the international community has been slow to respond. This alarming situation has sparked concerns among humanitarian groups who fear that Myanmar’s plight is being overlooked and neglected.
The earthquake, which struck in early September, is just one of many crises that Myanmar has had to endure in recent years. In 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit the country, killing over 140,000 people and causing widespread destruction. Since then, Myanmar has been plagued by ongoing civil wars and conflicts, forcing many to flee their homes and seek refuge in neighboring countries. In addition, the effects of climate change have taken a toll on the country, with frequent floods and droughts affecting food security and livelihoods.
Despite these challenges, the people of Myanmar have shown incredible resilience and strength in the face of adversity. They have come together to support one another and rebuild their communities time and time again. However, their determination and perseverance can only go so far without the support and assistance of the international community.
Humanitarian groups on the ground in Myanmar have been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by the earthquake. They have been faced with numerous challenges, including limited resources and access to remote areas, but have not wavered in their commitment to helping the people of Myanmar. However, the scale of the disaster is too great for them to tackle alone.
The United Nations has launched a $76 million appeal to provide crucial assistance to the people of Myanmar. This funding will go towards providing shelter, food, clean water, and other basic necessities to those in need. But, unfortunately, this appeal has only been 23% funded so far, leaving a huge deficit in meeting the needs of the affected communities.
It is clear that the international community must step up and do more to support Myanmar in this time of crisis. We cannot allow this country to become a forgotten crisis. The suffering of the people of Myanmar must not be overlooked or pushed aside.
In recent years, Myanmar has made significant progress in its transition to democracy and economic development. However, these gains are now at risk due to the devastating earthquake and the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The international community must continue to stand with Myanmar and support its efforts towards achieving lasting peace and stability.
There is still time to make a difference and help the people of Myanmar rebuild their lives. Every contribution, no matter how small, can have a significant impact on those in need. Let us come together in solidarity and show our support for the people of Myanmar.
As Jorge Moreira da Silva said, “Myanmar cannot become a forgotten crisis.” We must heed these words and take action to alleviate the suffering of the people of Myanmar. We owe it to them to show compassion and support during their time of need. Let us not fail them in their hour of need.
