Prospects for the Upcoming High-Level Conference on Rohingya

Last month marked a somber anniversary for the Rohingya people, as it has been eight years since they were forcibly displaced from their homes in Myanmar’s Rakhine State. Hundreds of thousands of Rohingyas were driven out by the Myanmar military, leaving behind everything they knew and loved. Their journey to safety and freedom has been a long and difficult one, but the international community has not forgotten them. On September 30, the UN General Assembly will convene a High-level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar, in hopes of finding a solution for these oppressed people.

The idea for this conference was first proposed by Bangladesh, a country that has opened its doors and hearts to the Rohingya refugees. Since 2017, over 1 million Rohingyas have taken shelter in Bangladesh, making it the largest refugee camp in the world. Despite the immense burden placed on the country, Bangladesh has provided food, shelter, and medical aid to these displaced people. It is a shining example of humanity and compassion in the face of a humanitarian crisis.

The situation in Myanmar is heartbreaking and the international community can no longer turn a blind eye to the suffering of the Rohingya people. They have been denied basic rights, treated as second-class citizens, and subjected to violence and persecution for decades. The military and extremist groups have carried out horrific acts of violence against them, including rape, torture, and mass killings. It is a clear violation of human rights and it is time for the world to come together and take action.

The High-level Conference is an opportunity for world leaders to address the root causes of the crisis and find a lasting solution for the Rohingya people. It is a chance to hold Myanmar accountable for its actions and to demand justice for the victims. The conference will also focus on the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of the Rohingyas to their homeland, with the assurance of their safety and protection. This is not just about providing aid and assistance, but about finding a sustainable solution for a community that has been forced to live in limbo for far too long.

Moreover, the conference will also shed light on the situation of other minorities in Myanmar, who have also faced discrimination and persecution. The Kachin, Chin, and Karen ethnic groups have also been subject to violence and displacement, and their voices need to be heard. The conference will provide a platform for these communities to share their stories and demand justice and equality.

The international community must come together to show their support for the Rohingya people. This crisis is not limited to just one country, but it affects us all. It is a test of our humanity and our ability to stand up for what is right. We cannot let another year go by without taking concrete action to end the suffering of the Rohingya people.

The High-level Conference is a crucial step towards finding a solution for the Rohingya people, but it is not the end. It is the responsibility of every nation to continue to put pressure on Myanmar to end the violence and persecution against the Rohingya community. It is also our duty to provide support and aid to those who have been forced to flee their homes.

We must also address the underlying issues of discrimination and hatred towards minority communities, not just in Myanmar but around the world. We must promote tolerance, acceptance, and a sense of belonging for all people, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Only then can we truly prevent such atrocities from happening again.

In conclusion, the High-level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar is a crucial opportunity for the international community to come together and find a solution for the suffering of the Rohingya people. It is time for the world to stand in solidarity with the Rohingya community and demand justice, safety, and dignity for all. Let us not forget the plight of the Rohingya people and take action to ensure a better future for them.
