The Guardian reported that an asylum seeker who was deported to France had returned to the UK in a small boat. The man stated, “If I had felt that France was safe for me, I would never have returned to the UK.”
This news is a huge embarrassment for Starmer, who had previously trumpeted his immigration agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron as a solution to the small boats crisis. The man’s return to Britain is a clear indication that the agreement has not been effective, and that the government needs to do more to address the situation.
Furthermore, it was also revealed that more asylum seekers have crossed the Channel in 2025 so far than the entire year of 2024, bringing the total number of arrivals since Labour came into power to over 60,000 in just 15 months. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp stated, “The floodgates are open, the borders are gone, and the British public are left picking up the pieces.”
Philp called out Starmer for waving through illegal immigrants with taxpayer-funded hotel keys and creating a revolving-door deportation scheme. He labeled the situation a national humiliation, and with each passing day, the pressure on Starmer continues to mount.
Mahmood tried to shift the blame onto the previous Conservative government, stating that they had left the borders in crisis, and that the country is still dealing with the consequences. She also highlighted that the current government has detained and removed over 35,000 immigrants who were in the UK illegally. However, she acknowledged that more needs to be done in terms of removing illegal immigrants and preventing small boat crossings in the first place.
Mahmood said, “I will do whatever it takes to restore order to our border,” but now it remains to be seen if she can deliver on her promise. With morale among Labour MPs declining and Starmer’s future as PM increasingly questioned, he needs his home secretary to act swiftly and effectively to address the ongoing crisis.
