Tensions Between US And Russia Deepen As Trump’s Treasury Secretary Hits Out At ‘Propagandist’ Envoy

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, left, spoke to reporters aboard Air Force One while traveling from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Tokyo, Japan on Monday, October 27, 2025. President Donald Trump, right, listened intently as Bessent delivered a strong message to the Kremlin in response to their dismissive attitude towards the US’s new sanctions on Moscow.

The White House recently implemented fresh sanctions against Russia, in an effort to put pressure on President Vladimir Putin to end his war in Ukraine. These new sanctions, which have been welcomed by European allies, specifically target Russia’s oil industry. In a bold move, President Trump froze all US-based assets of Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil. Additionally, the US has made it possible for secondary penalties to be imposed on foreign institutions that conduct transactions with entities on the sanctions list.

This unexpected move by President Trump has surprised many, as he has previously expressed sympathy for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine while also calling for peace in the region. Plans for a high-level summit with Putin in Budapest have also been put on hold, with Trump insisting that he will not meet with Putin unless there is a clear plan for peace.

However, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who plays a key role in the diplomacy between Moscow and Washington, has tried to downplay the impact of the new sanctions. In an interview with US media, Dmitriev stated that the sanctions would not have much effect on Russia, claiming that “no pressure works on Russia.” This dismissive attitude did not sit well with Treasury Secretary Bessent, who responded in a fiery interview with CBS News on Sunday.

Bessent was quick to point out the absurdity of publishing the words of a Russian propagandist, stating, “I mean, what else is he going to say? The Russian economy is a wartime economy. Growth is virtually zero.” He went on to explain that the US has the power to make a substantial dent in Putin’s profits and therefore impact his war machine.

President Putin himself has described the new sanctions as an “unfriendly act” and has vowed not to give in to economic pressure. Despite this, Russia has continued to launch missile and drone attacks across Ukraine over the weekend. In fact, Putin boasted about successfully testing a new nuclear-powered cruise missile on Sunday.

In the midst of this tense situation, news agency Reuters has reported that the Trump administration is already considering further sanctions unless Putin engages in peace talks. President Trump himself has urged Putin to focus on ending the war in Ukraine instead of testing new weapons. He stated, “They know we have a nuclear submarine, the greatest in the world, right off their shores, so I mean, it doesn’t have to go 8,000 miles.” Trump also added, “I don’t think it’s appropriate for Putin to be saying, either. You ought to get the war ended, the war that should have taken one week is now in its fourth year. That’s what you ought to do instead of testing missiles.”

It is clear that the US is taking a strong stance against Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The new sanctions, along with the possibility of further penalties, show that the US is not backing down in its efforts to bring about peace in the region. President Trump’s unwavering stance has been praised by many, including BBC Russia expert Steve Rosenberg, who stated, “This is a reality check for Putin after the talks were scrapped.”

In response to the new sanctions, a Kremlin ally has blasted President Trump, calling it an “act of war.” However, it is important to remember that these sanctions are not an act of war, but rather a strategic move to put pressure on Russia and bring an end to the conflict in Ukraine.

It is evident that President Trump is committed to finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. His actions, including the implementation of sanctions, show that he is not afraid to take a strong stance against Russia in order to achieve this goal. The US is standing firm in its support for Ukraine and will continue to do so until peace is achieved.

In the face of Russian aggression, President Trump has shown strong leadership and determination. He is not afraid to take action and make tough decisions in order to protect the interests of the United States and its allies. The new sanctions on Russia’s oil industry are just one example of this.

In conclusion, President Trump’s Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent
