Speaking to IPS on the sidelines of the International Civil Society Week in Bangkok (November 1–5), Amitabh Behar, Executive Director of Oxfam International and a passionate human rights advocate, shared his insights on the current state of the world and his hopes for the future. Despite the challenges of rising inequality, growing authoritarianism, and the misuse of AI and surveillance, Behar expressed optimism and urged young people to continue fighting for a better world.
Behar’s concerns about rising inequality are not unfounded. According to Oxfam’s latest report, the world’s 26 richest people own the same amount of wealth as the poorest 50% of the global population. This staggering statistic highlights the urgent need for action to address the growing wealth gap. Behar emphasized that this issue is not just about economics, but also about human rights. He stated, “Extreme inequality is a violation of human rights and it is our collective responsibility to address it.”
In addition to economic inequality, Behar also highlighted the threat of growing authoritarianism. He expressed concern about the shrinking civic spaces and the erosion of democratic values in many countries. Behar stressed the importance of protecting and promoting human rights, including the right to freedom of expression and assembly. He urged governments to listen to the voices of their citizens and to create an enabling environment for civil society to thrive.
Behar also raised the issue of the misuse of AI and surveillance, which poses a threat to privacy and human rights. He warned against the use of these technologies to suppress dissent and control populations. Behar called for ethical guidelines and regulations to ensure that AI and surveillance are used for the benefit of society, rather than for the interests of a few.
Despite these challenges, Behar remains optimistic and believes that change is possible. He pointed out that throughout history, young people have been at the forefront of social and political movements, driving positive change. He urged young people to continue using their voices and taking action to create a more just and equal world. “We need young people to be the agents of change and to challenge the status quo,” Behar stated.
Behar also emphasized the importance of collaboration and solidarity among civil society organizations. He stressed that by working together, they can amplify their impact and bring about meaningful change. He also called on governments and the private sector to join forces with civil society to address the pressing issues of our time.
The International Civil Society Week in Bangkok provided a platform for civil society organizations to come together, share their experiences, and strategize for the future. Behar highlighted the importance of such gatherings, stating, “We need to come together, learn from each other, and build alliances to create a more equitable and just world.”
