Common Grooming Habit Could Land You In Hospital, Surgeon Warns

The Danger of the ”Triangle of Death” on Your Face and How to Remove Nose Hair Safely

Have you ever heard of the “triangle of death”? It may sound like something out of a horror movie, but it’s actually a small area on your face. Also known as the danger triangle, it covers the section of your face from the bridge of your nose to the corners of your mouth. This area is considered high-risk because it is connected to our cavernous sinus, a series of veins that connect directly to our brain.

Experts warn against squeezing pimples or spots in this area as it can potentially lead to brain infections. But according to ENT surgeon Dr. Tonia L Farmer, another step in our beauty routine may also pose a risk – plucking nose hair.

In an Instagram Reel, Dr. Farmer stated, “You’ve probably heard that you should not be squeezing a pimple in the ‘danger zone’ of your face.” This is because it can cause sepsis, a severe immune response to infection that can be life-threatening.

But it’s not just about pimples. Dr. Farmer explained that the same rule applies to any type of injury in this area, such as a cut, nose piercing, or removing nose hair. When we break the skin in the triangle of death, we leave it open to potential infection. This can lead to complications due to bacteria, the most common being Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus species, both of which live on our skin.

If left untreated, a simple infection in this area can require a trip to the hospital for antibiotics and even incision and drainage. In rare cases, an unmanaged infection can lead to septic cavernous sinus thrombosis, a dangerous clot in the veins connected to the brain.

So how can we safely remove nose hair? Experts recommend keeping the “triangle of death” clean and unbroken. This means avoiding yanking any hair out and instead using tools like nose trimmers or “curve-tipped scissors, with no sharp edges” to get rid of unwanted hairs.

If you notice an infection spreading across your face or experience symptoms such as chills, fever, or shaking, seek medical help immediately.

In conclusion, it’s important to be mindful of the “triangle of death” on your face and to take precautions when removing nose hair. Keeping this area clean and unbroken can help prevent potential infections and complications. So next time you reach for those tweezers, remember to think twice before plucking those nose hairs. Your health and safety should always come first.
