Exclusive: Voters Should Be ‘Worried’ About Farage Becoming PM, Says Cabinet Minister

Nigel Farage and Nathan Gill Campaigning for the Brexit Party in 2019: A Call for Stronger Safeguards Against Foreign Interference in UK Politics

In 2019, the world watched as the United Kingdom stood on the brink of a historic decision – whether to leave or remain in the European Union. For many, it was a moment that would define the future of the country. And at the forefront of the Leave campaign were two notable figures – Nigel Farage and Nathan Gill, both campaigning for the newly formed Brexit Party.

But little did anyone know at the time, that their political alliance would later be plagued with controversy and allegations of foreign interference. Fast forward to 2021, and Nathan Gill, the former leader of Reform UK in Wales, has been sentenced to 10-and-a-half years in jail for accepting bribes from Russia.

This shocking revelation has raised concerns about the potential threat of foreign interference in British politics. And it has brought to light the need for stronger safeguards to protect the democratic process in the UK.

In the wake of this scandal, Communities Secretary Steve Reed has launched an independent review of foreign financial interference in UK politics. He has also spoken out against the possibility of Nigel Farage becoming prime minister, stating that voters should be “worried” about such a prospect.

Reed’s concerns are valid. The case of Nathan Gill has highlighted the vulnerability of our political system to foreign influence. And it is alarming to note that Farage has not taken decisive action to investigate any other potential links between his party and the Kremlin.

It is important to note that Reed’s statement is not a mere political attack on his opponents. It is a genuine worry for the sanctity of our democracy. The fact that a senior politician from the Reform UK party, previously known as UKIP and later the Brexit Party, has pleaded guilty to accepting bribes from Russia is a grave matter.

In his own words, Reed has called this conduct “a stain on our democracy”. And it is time for all of us, regardless of political affiliation, to come together and address this issue.

The independent review, chaired by former top civil servant Philip Rycroft, is a step in the right direction. It aims to identify any gaps in our current safeguards and suggest ways to strengthen them. This is necessary in order to prevent any further incidents of foreign interference in our political system.

As Reed rightly pointed out, the facts are clear. A British politician was taking bribes to further the interests of the Russian regime – a regime that has been known for its aggressive actions, including forcefully deporting vulnerable Ukrainian children and using a deadly nerve agent to kill a British citizen on British soil.

This is not a matter to be taken lightly. We must all be vigilant and make sure that our democracy is not for sale to any foreign power.

Labour MP Rachel Blake has also voiced her support for the government’s decision to launch the review. She acknowledged that the case of Nathan Gill was a shocking breach of public trust and a clear warning about the threat of foreign interference. We cannot afford to turn a blind eye to such threats.

As citizens of the UK, it is our responsibility to ensure that our political system is transparent and free from external influence. We must demand accountability and integrity from our elected officials.

In light of these recent events, it is also important for the Brexit Party and its leader Nigel Farage to reflect on their actions. It is concerning that Farage has not taken any steps to investigate the actions of his former ally, Nathan Gill. As a politician, it is his duty to uphold the values of democracy and protect the interests of the country.

In an interview with ITV News, Farage defended himself by stating that he does not have the authority to access emails or phone messages to conduct an investigation. However, this is not an acceptable excuse. As a leader, it is his responsibility to ensure the integrity of his party and its members.

It is also worth noting that Farage himself has appeared on the Russian propaganda TV channel, Russia Today. This raises questions about his own personal ties to the Kremlin and his stance on foreign interference in UK politics.

Moreover, it is concerning that Gill’s actions were not just limited to his role in the Brexit Party, but also during his time as the leader of Reform UK in Wales. This is a clear indication that stronger safeguards are needed not just within the Brexit Party, but in all political parties.

The case of Nathan Gill should serve as a wake-up
