The 1 Thing Doctors Always Do When Staying In A Hotel Room

When you’re on holiday, the last thing you want to worry about is bed bugs. Unfortunately, these tiny, crawly critters can be found in even the most luxurious of hotel rooms. But don’t let that ruin your vacation – there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your belongings.

First and foremost, it’s important to do a quick check for bed bugs as soon as you enter your hotel room. “When I first enter a hotel room, I typically leave my luggage at the entryway while I do a quick check for bed bugs,” says Dr. Brianna Olamiju, a dermatologist at Spring Street Dermatology. This may seem like a hassle, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

To do a thorough check, place your luggage in the bathtub or on a tiled surface and use a flashlight to inspect the mattress seams, headboard, and furniture for any signs of bed bugs. These can include tiny black dots (which are actually bed bug feces), shed skins, or small blood spots on the sheets. If you do find evidence of bed bugs, request a different room or consider changing hotels.

It’s important to note that bed bugs are most active at night, so it’s a good idea to do a second inspection around nighttime as well. “If you find evidence of bed bugs, I’d request a different room far away, not adjacent, above or below, or consider changing hotels depending on the situation and response,” says Dr. Tiffany Libby, the Director of Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgery at Brown Dermatology in Rhode Island.

If you do encounter bed bugs during your stay, it’s important to take immediate action. First, shower and change your clothes to prevent any bed bugs from hitching a ride back home with you. Then, seal your luggage and wash and dry all of your clothing on high heat as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to heat-treat any items that can tolerate it. When leaving the hotel, keep your luggage sealed in a plastic bag to prevent any bed bugs from escaping.

Once you’re home, it’s important to clean your luggage thoroughly. Vacuum the suitcase or bag, paying special attention to zippers, seams, and pockets. Wipe down all surfaces with alcohol to kill any remaining bed bugs or eggs. It’s also a good idea to keep your luggage in a garage or shed until it can be properly cleaned.

If you do end up with bed bug bites, there are steps you can take to reduce discomfort. “From a skin standpoint, treat bites with topical corticosteroids and oral antihistamines if itchy. Avoid scratching to reduce the risk of secondary infection or scarring,” says Dr. Olamiju. Placing a cool, damp cloth over the affected areas can also provide relief.

It’s important to note that bed bug bites may not appear immediately. They may take one to three days to show up, and they can often be mistaken for mosquito bites. However, there are some key differences. “Bed bug bites tend to present as 2-5 millimeter red bumps in a linear pattern, often referred to as the ‘breakfast, lunch, and dinner’ pattern,” explains Dr. Kefah Al-Ramahi, an internal medicine physician at Hartford HealthCare. If you suspect you’ve been bitten by bed bugs, keep an eye out for this pattern.

In some cases, people may experience an allergic reaction to bed bug bites. “Hypersensitivity reactions may develop in some who become sensitized to bed bug saliva,” says Dr. Al-Ramahi. If you experience severe itching, hives, or anaphylaxis, seek medical attention immediately.

If your bed bug bites don’t heal within a couple of weeks or if you develop a secondary infection, it’s important to visit your medical provider for further guidance.

In conclusion, while bed bugs may be an unfortunate reality of traveling, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your belongings. By being vigilant and taking immediate action if you do encounter bed bugs, you can ensure a comfortable and enjoyable holiday. So don’t let the thought of bed bugs ruin your trip – just remember to do a quick check upon entering your hotel room and take precautions when leaving. Happy travels!
