Spring is finally here and with it comes a sense of renewed energy and positivity. The warmer temperatures, longer days, and break from the constant rain have put a smile on everyone’s face. And it’s not just us humans who are feeling the effects of this change in season – our gardens are also coming to life with vibrant colors and new growth.
If you have a garden, you may have already noticed the signs of spring. Tulips, hyacinths, and primroses are in full bloom, and the daffodils are starting to raise their heads, as if they too are excited for the arrival of spring.
But with the increase in activity in our gardens, comes the need for more work. So, we have compiled a list of the top tasks that UK gardeners should consider this month to make the most of this beautiful season.
1) Get ready for your first mow
As the grass starts to grow, it’s time to get your lawn mower out for its first cut of the year. However, it’s important to remember to set the blade to its maximum height to avoid damaging the grass. Also, make sure the blades are sharp before mowing to ensure a clean cut.
It’s best to mow on a dry day and avoid any areas where bulbs may be growing, such as daffodils. This will prevent any accidental damage to these beautiful flowers.
2) Prune roses
Late February and early March are the perfect time to prune your roses. This will ensure that they have fresh, healthy growth in the spring and summer. When pruning, make sure to cut no more than 5mm away from a bud and angle the cut away from the bud to prevent water from pooling on it. Keep your clippers sharp and prune any dead growth until you see a white pith.
3) Mulch fruit trees
Give your fruit trees and raspberry bushes a boost by adding compost to the base. This will provide them with much-needed nutrients for the upcoming season. Just make sure the area is free of weeds before mulching and avoid placing the compost too close to the roots.
4) Sow and grow veggies
Now is the perfect time to start planting your vegetables for the year. Broad beans, chard, onions, kale, beetroot, carrots, spring onions, early potatoes, and leeks can all be planted this month. If you have a greenhouse, you can also start growing early broccoli, cauliflower, celery, chives, and chillies.
5) Plant flowers
Don’t forget to add some color to your garden by planting flowers. Cornflowers, lupins, rubella, Californian lilacs, and weigela can all be planted now. For more delicate flowers like begonias, dahlias, and zinnias, it’s best to start them indoors or in trays. And for a burst of summer blooms, plant ladioli, lilies, and Eucomis bulbs.
6) Keep some dandelions in your garden
As the bees start to make their comeback, it’s important to provide them with a food source. While many may see dandelions as pesky weeds, they are actually an important source of food for bees, especially the rare Pantaloon bee. These bees rely on “weedy” yellow flowers like dandelions, ragwort, cat’s ear, and common fleabane for survival. So, consider leaving some dandelions in your garden to help these important pollinators.
Spring is a time of growth, renewal, and beauty. So, make the most of this season by following these top gardening tasks. Your garden will thank you with a burst of color and life, and you’ll be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor all season long. Happy gardening!
