Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again captured the world’s attention with his nonchalant attitude towards diplomacy and international relations. As he waved off concerns about being late for his long-awaited call with US President Donald Trump, it became clear that Putin’s priorities lie elsewhere.
The call, scheduled for 1pm to 3pm UK time today, was meant to focus on America’s proposal of a 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing war in Ukraine. However, Putin’s actions suggest that he has other matters at hand, as he was seen speaking to a room full of oligarchs at 1pm.
When asked if he would be late for his call with the White House, Putin simply dismissed the question and told the audience not to pay attention to his spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov. He joked that Peskov’s job is “to talk” and not to dictate his schedule.
This display of nonchalance is not an isolated incident. Last week, Putin reportedly made Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, wait for at least eight hours. The Russian president was allegedly too busy to meet with Witkoff, as he was holding a state visit with his top ally, Belarusian leader Aleksandr Lukashenko.
However, Trump later denied these claims on his Truth Social platform, accusing the media of spreading fake news and trying to “demean” him. He also emphasized that his administration is trying to end the war in Ukraine and bring Russia back to the international table.
This sudden shift in the west’s approach towards Russia has caused significant backlash and confusion. For the past three years, Europe and the US have been isolating Putin due to his invasion of Ukraine in 2022. But with Trump’s push for peace, it seems that he is offering Putin a seat at the table once again.
In fact, Trump’s actions suggest that he is more aligned with the aggressors in Russia rather than the innocent victims in Ukraine. This was evident when he publicly scolded Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for not wearing a suit during their meeting and accused him of being ungrateful for America’s support throughout the war.
Trump’s response to the conflict has caused an unprecedented diplomatic spat, with the US withholding intelligence sharing and military aid to Ukraine. However, Zelenskyy has since tried to build bridges and has agreed to Trump’s 30-day ceasefire proposal. As a result, the White House has resumed sharing intelligence and providing military aid to the country.
This sudden change in dynamics has left many questioning Trump’s true intentions and loyalty. Is he trying to end the war and bring peace to Ukraine, or is he simply trying to appease Putin and gain favor with the Russian leader?
Only time will tell the true motive behind Trump’s actions, but one thing is for sure – Putin’s nonchalant attitude towards international agreements and relations is not going unnoticed. His behavior towards the call with Trump and his treatment of other world leaders raises concerns about his true intentions and priorities.
As the world continues to watch Putin’s actions and decipher his motives, one thing is certain – he will continue to defy expectations and surprise us with his bold and unapologetic approach to diplomacy. Whether this approach will lead to lasting peace in Ukraine or further conflict remains to be seen. But for now, we can only hope that Putin’s actions are in the best interest of his country and the world as a whole.
