Mario Cantone has been making audiences laugh for years with his quick wit and comedic timing. But in the highly anticipated Sex and the City spin-off, And Just Like That, he’s showing a different side of himself – one that includes some steamy sex scenes.
In a recent episode of the Are You a Charlotte? podcast, hosted by his Sex and the City co-star Kristin Davis, Cantone opened up about his experience filming intimate scenes with his onscreen flame, played by Sebastiano Pigazzi.
He revealed that when he first found out he would be getting a boyfriend in the second season of And Just Like That, he immediately hit the gym and got a trainer. And it’s a good thing he did, because his character, Anthony Marentino, has a backside shot in one of the scenes.
But even with all the preparation, Cantone admitted to being nervous before the scene aired. He joked, “The night before it dropped, I didn’t sleep. I was like, ‘These homosexuals are going to come after me.’ And then I saw it, and I went, ‘You know what? I look OK. And I’m old, and I’m next to him’.”
To his surprise, the scene was a hit and his DMs blew up the next day. This positive response encouraged Cantone to request even more nudity in the upcoming season.
“I like being sexualized at 65 years old. It’s good,” he said. “Before [we] started filming, I said to [showrunner and executive producer] Michael Patrick King, ‘I want more nudity.’ I said, ‘I like being sexualized at 65 years old. It’s good.'”
Fans of Sex and the City will remember that Cantone’s character, Anthony, and his future husband Stanford Blatch (played by the late Willie Garson) didn’t exactly get along in the original series. But in the second Sex and the City spin-off film, they tied the knot in a heartwarming ceremony.
After Garson’s passing in 2021, Cantone’s character’s storyline and the onscreen marriage came to an end in season two of And Just Like That. Stanford moved to Japan to work with a client and later divorced Anthony.
But now, in season three of And Just Like That, Cantone is back and ready to bring even more laughs and heart to the show. The new season premieres in the US on Thursday, May 29, and will likely be available in the UK the following day on Now and Sky.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the return of their favorite characters and the new storylines that will unfold. And with Cantone’s request for more nudity, it’s clear that the show will continue to push boundaries and explore new territory.
So mark your calendars and get ready to see Mario Cantone like you’ve never seen him before in And Just Like That. It’s sure to be a wild and hilarious ride.
