Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights Just Had Its First Test Screening, And It Sounds Absolutely Wild

The 2021 Bafta event was full of glitz, glamour and excitement, but one person who stood out amongst the crowd was British filmmaker Emerald Fennell. With her striking features and bold fashion choices, all eyes were on her as she walked the red carpet and mingled with fellow industry professionals.

But aside from her fashion sense, there was buzz surrounding Emerald for a different reason – her next film. Warning: Potential spoilers ahead for Wuthering Heights, the Oscar-winning director’s latest project.

Emerald Fennell has already captured the world’s attention with her previous works, including the award-winning and controversial film Saltburn. But her adaptation of the classic gothic novel Wuthering Heights has raised eyebrows and turned heads even before its release.

Last summer, it was announced that Emerald was taking on the challenge of bringing Wuthering Heights to the big screen once again. This news was met with a mixture of excitement and skepticism, as many questioned whether the timeless Emily Brontë story could be given a fresh and modern twist.

Well, this week the first test screening of the film took place in Dallas, Texas and the reviews have been nothing short of polarizing. According to World Of Reel, the reactions from the audience were split right down the middle, with some loving the film and others feeling more cautious.

The article from World Of Reel describes Wuthering Heights as “far more explicit than any previous adaptation”, and detailed specific scenes that may shock viewers. One scene allegedly features a hanged man ejaculating mid-execution, causing the onlookers to go into a frenzy, with even a nun getting hands-on with the man’s body after he’s killed. Other scenes include multiple moments of masturbation and a BDSM-tinged encounter.

But it’s not just the explicit scenes that have caught people’s attention. The film is said to lean heavily into the “shock value” that Emerald is known for in her previous works, and has been described as “aggressively provocative”, “tonally abrasive” and “deliberately unromantic”.

While some may shy away from this type of material, others are eagerly anticipating the release of the film, which is currently slated for February 2026. It remains to be seen whether all of these potentially controversial scenes will make it into the final cut, as the polarizing reactions from the test screening may prompt some changes.

Interestingly, the article from World Of Reel also claims that the film “diverges significantly from the source material”. This may cause concern for fans of the book, but it’s not uncommon for filmmakers to take creative liberties with adaptations in order to bring their own unique vision to the story.

HuffPost UK has reached out to Emerald Fennell’s team and the production company distributing Wuthering Heights, Warner Bros., for comment, but for now, details about the film remain scarce.

What we do know is that Wuthering Heights will star two big names in Hollywood – Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi. The duo will take on the lead roles of Catherine and Heathcliffe, with another rising star from Netflix’s hit show Adolescence, Owen Cooper, also making an appearance in a supporting role.

For those who may be worried about the changes from the source material, it’s worth noting that Emerald and Margot have worked together before on the highly anticipated Barbie movie, so there is already a solid working relationship between the two.

While the film still has a ways to go before its release, the buzz surrounding it is only getting stronger. With a talented cast and a visionary director at the helm, there’s no doubt that Wuthering Heights will be a must-see film when it hits theaters in 2026.

In the meantime, stay tuned for more updates and trailers as we wait in anticipation for Emerald Fennell’s latest offering. With her track record of pushing boundaries and creating buzz-worthy films, we can only imagine what she has in store for us with Wuthering Heights. One thing is for sure, we can’t wait to see it.
