Russian President Vladimir Putin has once again made headlines, this time at the Summit of Commonwealth States in Saint Petersburg, Russia on December 22, 2025. As tensions continue to rise between Russia and Ukraine, the world is watching closely as Putin reacts to the ongoing conflict.
For almost four years now, Putin has been pushing his forces into Ukraine, causing immense loss of life and destruction. According to recent estimates, the Russian army has surpassed one million casualties, with the overall death toll being five times higher than that of all Soviet and Russian wars combined since the end of World War 2.
But what is even more alarming is that the vast majority of these casualties are coming from ethnic minorities living in Russia’s poor regions. This is not a coincidence, but a calculated strategy by Putin to prop up his illegal invasion of Ukraine.
The UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has recently released a report stating that Putin is relying on recruiting from impoverished regions, where ethnic minorities make up a significant portion of the population. This allows him to offer financial incentives, while also limiting the impact on the urban-dwelling population who have more political agency.
The report also suggests that Putin and his top team are willing to tolerate high casualty rates as long as it does not affect public or elite support for the war. This shows the ruthless nature of the Russian president and his determination to continue with his aggressive tactics.
In fact, a large-scale study by independent Russian media outlet Proekt found that less than one percent of Russian state officials have relatives who have participated in the illegal invasion. This further highlights the disproportionate burden being placed on ethnic minorities to carry out Putin’s agenda.
With such a high rate of attrition, Putin has to constantly recruit new soldiers to sustain his offensive. In September 2022, he faced nationwide backlash when he attempted to implement a partial mobilisation of reservists. Protesters called for Putin himself to be sent to the front lines instead.
However, Putin has found a way to continue his war efforts while avoiding such public outrage. He has set up a system of hiring soldiers with promises of huge signing bonuses, some up to $50,000, as reported by POLITICO. This allows him to continue with his aggressive tactics while still dragging his feet over peace efforts from the West.
As the conflict in Ukraine continues, it is clear that Putin’s actions are not only causing immense harm and suffering, but also revealing his true intentions and tactics. The world must stand united against such aggressive and manipulative behavior, and support Ukraine in its fight for peace and sovereignty.
The latest update from the UK’s MoD on the situation in Ukraine, released on December 23, 2025, further emphasizes the need for global attention and action. The report also highlights the role of Defence Intelligence in monitoring and analyzing the situation, providing crucial insights and information to aid decision-making.
In the face of this ongoing crisis, it is important for us to stay informed and educated about the situation in Ukraine and the actions of Putin’s regime. The MoD has also encouraged the public to learn more about Defence Intelligence’s use of language in these reports, highlighting the importance of accurate and unbiased information in times of conflict.
As we look towards the future, it is crucial for the international community to stand with Ukraine and support its efforts for peace and stability. In the words of the Ministry of Defence, “Stand with Ukraine”. Let us all join hands and stand united against aggression and injustice.
