British Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently made a visit to Yash Raj Films in Mumbai, India, where he viewed a screening of a film. This visit has sparked speculation about his future as the leader of the Labour Party, with some predicting that he may step down before facing a potential coup.
Starmer’s leadership has been under scrutiny in recent months as the party’s popularity has plummeted in the polls and his own approval rating has reached historic lows. Many political analysts have pointed to the upcoming local elections in May as a crucial moment for his time in office, with predictions of Labour losing control over councils in England and devolved governments in Wales and Scotland.
The speculation surrounding Starmer’s future has also led to discussions about potential successors, with Health Secretary Wes Streeting, former Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner, Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood among the names being mentioned. However, one Labour MP has suggested that Starmer may choose to step down himself rather than wait to be ousted from office.
John McDonnell, a backbencher and former Shadow Chancellor, believes that Starmer is a responsible and serious politician who will make the decision to step down if he feels he is no longer the right person for the job. In an interview, McDonnell stated, “I’ve worked with Keir over the years, he’s a serious politician, he’s a serious person, and he’s a responsible person. If he thinks after the May elections – if they are as disastrous as some people think – I don’t think they will be, but we’ll see – if they are, I think he’ll take the view himself, he’ll take the judgment himself if he is the right person for the job.”
McDonnell also noted that the government could improve its standing with the public by avoiding “repeating the same mistakes of the past” and making frequent U-turns. He believes that if the government focuses on addressing the real issues that people are facing, such as the cost of living crisis and investing in public services, there is a chance to turn things around. However, he also acknowledged that it may take longer than the May elections to see a significant change.
This is not the first time Starmer has considered stepping down as Labour leader. Last year, after the party’s poor performance in the 2021 local elections and a by-election loss, he admitted that he had thought about quitting. However, after reflecting and consulting with others, he decided to stay and continue working towards bringing about change within the party.
In an interview with Sky News, Starmer said, “I did [consider quitting] because I didn’t feel that I should be bigger than the party and that if I couldn’t bring about the change, perhaps there should be a change. But actually, in the end, I reflected on it, talked to very many people and doubled down and determined, no, it is the change in the Labour Party we need.”
Despite the challenges and criticisms, McDonnell remains committed to the Labour Party and believes that it is the natural home for both himself and Starmer. In a recent interview, he stated, “The natural home for Jeremy [Corbyn] is the Labour Party. It’s the same with me.”
The speculation surrounding Starmer’s future has also led to discussions about potential defections to other parties. However, McDonnell has made it clear that he is not considering leaving the Labour Party. In a recent interview with Times Radio, he stated, “I remain committed to Labour and I’m not considering defecting to any other party.”
As the Labour Party continues to face challenges and criticism, it is clear that Starmer’s leadership will be closely watched in the coming months. However, with the support of his colleagues and a determination to bring about change, Starmer remains focused on leading the party towards a brighter future.
