President Donald Trump has once again caused a stir on social media, this time with a controversial penguin meme. The meme, which was originally posted by the White House, features an AI image of Trump walking with a penguin through a snowy landscape as the bird holds the US flag. A Greenland flag can also be seen in the distance.
The post, which was accompanied by the caption “embrace the penguin,” was met with confusion and criticism for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was a copy of a popular “Nihilist Penguin” meme that has been circulating on the internet. This meme originated from a 2007 documentary where one penguin separated himself from the rest of the colony and walked towards the mountains.
Secondly, the post was shared shortly after Trump had come to an agreement with Nato allies over Greenland, which was meant to put his plan to control the Arctic island to rest. This provocative post suggested that Trump still had plans for Greenland, despite the agreement.
And thirdly, penguins are known to live in the southern hemisphere, not in the Arctic circle where Trump has been focusing his attention in recent months. This only added to the confusion and made the post seem even more nonsensical.
But the White House doubled down on their post, with a later comment stating, “The penguin does not concern himself with the opinions of those who cannot comprehend.” This only further fueled the confusion and backlash from the public.
Things took an even stranger turn when Laila Cunningham, Reform’s mayoral candidate for London, decided to recreate the controversial meme. In her version, she inserted her own silhouette into the image and added London landmarks in the background, covered in snow. Her caption read, “Choose a new path for London. Before it’s too late.”
Unlike most of the other memes circulating on the internet, both Trump’s and Cunningham’s posts featured a flag. However, while Trump’s post featured the US and Greenland flags, Cunningham’s post featured the Union Jack.
This move by Cunningham was met with even more confusion and criticism, as many pointed out that Trump had insulted Brits earlier in the week by claiming that Nato troops stayed back from the frontlines during the Afghanistan war. This only added to the already controversial nature of the meme.
Many took to social media to express their confusion and disapproval of Cunningham’s post, with some even calling it “tone-deaf” and “absolutely bizarre.” Some even questioned the motives behind the post, with one user suggesting that it was an attempt to connect themselves to Trump in order to gain a boost in the upcoming elections.
It’s clear that this move by Cunningham has not been well received by the public. In a time where tensions are high and political divisions are deep, it’s important for politicians to think carefully about the messages they are sending out to the public. Using controversial and confusing memes is not the way to gain support or win an election.
As the mayoral candidate for London, Cunningham should be focusing on issues that are important to the city and its residents, rather than trying to mimic a meme that has caused so much confusion and backlash. It’s time for politicians to take their responsibilities seriously and focus on real issues, rather than trying to gain attention through controversial and nonsensical means.
In the words of one Twitter user, “I admit UK politics are not my bag. But this seems like a really odd choice for a *London* mayoral candidate.” Let’s hope that Cunningham and other politicians learn from this incident and focus on what truly matters – the well-being and progress of their cities and countries.
