Four Years In, Putin’s Ukraine Conquest Is Still Stalled – But He’s Still Got Trump On His Side

The recent pool photograph distributed by the Russian state agency Sputnik, showing U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin talking on the tarmac, has raised many concerns and questions.

The photo, taken at a U.S.-Russia summit on Ukraine at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, on August 15, 2025, depicts a paradoxical situation. On one hand, the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin has been losing tens of thousands of soldiers per month and has escalated a war-crime campaign, targeting civilians in his quest to seize neighboring Ukraine. On the other hand, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to turn a blind eye to Putin’s actions and instead, is pressuring Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to give up the territory that Putin desires.

It’s been four years since Putin launched an invasion to seize Ukraine in a matter of days. However, instead of diminishing, the conflict has only worsened. Putin’s ground offensive has ground to a halt and he is now resorting to killing and maiming innocent civilians with missiles and drones. Yet, none of this has convinced President Trump to drop his tacit approval of the invasion.

It is evident that Trump’s approach towards the situation is different from that of his predecessor, Joe Biden. While Biden had resumed defensive weapons shipments to Ukraine and put economic pressure on Putin to end the deadly conflict, Trump is taking a different route. He is putting pressure on Zelenskyy to give up the territory that Putin wants, in the hopes of striking a deal for a ceasefire.

Trump’s actions and statements have raised concerns among experts and analysts, who believe that he sees Ukraine as weaker and therefore, easier to coerce. This tactic of pressuring Zelenskyy instead of Putin is not only ineffective but also damaging. It shows a lack of understanding of the situation and a disregard for the lives of innocent civilians who are being caught in the crossfire.

Trump’s focus on striking a deal at any cost, in the hopes of gaining a Nobel Peace Prize, is alarming. He seems to be more concerned about his own political agenda than the lives of those affected by this conflict. His actions have only served to embolden Putin, who knows that Trump will never truly pressure him.

As a result, Putin continues to stall and demand his maximalist position, knowing that Zelenskyy will never agree. This only leads to more suffering for the Ukrainian people. Trump’s repeated warnings to Zelenskyy to “get moving” only add to the pressure on the Ukrainian President, who is trying to negotiate a peaceful resolution.

It’s no secret that Trump has always had a soft spot for Putin. He has publicly admired him and even tried to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. During the 2016 presidential election, Trump willingly accepted and used Russian assistance, even though he knew it was coming from a hostile foreign power. This raises questions about his motives and loyalties.

Trump’s actions and statements have also caused concern among America’s traditional allies in Western Europe. They see the conflict in Ukraine as a potential preview of what could happen to their own countries if they were to face aggression from Russia. Trump’s recent visit to the Munich Security Conference, where he skipped a meeting to discuss Ukraine with traditional U.S. allies, and instead met with pro-Russia leaders in Hungary and Slovakia, has raised eyebrows and caused worry among European leaders.

It’s clear that Trump’s approach towards Russia and Ukraine is not only damaging to the region but also to America’s relationships with its allies. His continued insistence on pressuring Ukraine while turning a blind eye to Putin’s actions is not only ineffective, but also goes against America’s values and interests.

Furthermore, the recent photo of Trump and Putin, where Trump is seen proudly displaying it in the White House, is concerning. It shows Trump’s admiration for a dictator who has been accused of war crimes by the International Criminal Court. This is not the kind of leadership that America needs.

In conclusion, it’s time for President Trump to put aside his personal agenda and prioritize the lives and well-being of innocent civilians caught in the conflict in Ukraine. He needs to recognize the severity of the situation and take appropriate action to pressure Putin to end his aggression. It’s time for America to stand with its allies and stand up against Russian aggression, instead of turning a blind eye to it.
